Follow these guidelines if you or someone you know has been injured. Metairie area residents should always be prepared in the event of an emergency.

• 1 What to Bring Show More

  If possible, patients should bring the following with them to the ED:

  • Personal Identification such as a driver’s license, passport, etc.
  • Copy of medical insurance information
  • List of current medications and dosages in which they are taken

• 2 Check-In Show More

  Upon arrival at the Emergency Department patients are asked to complete a “quick registration,” to enter their information into our electronic medical records database. Proper identification is very important as it ensures that we access the correct medical record. At that time either an ED technician or paramedic will take the patient’s vital signs, or they will be escorted straight to the triage nurse.

• 3 Triage Show More

  The triage nurse makes sure the patients with the most serious injury or illness are seen first. We do not see patients according to their time of arrival, but according the seriousness of their condition. All patients are important to us, but priority must be given to patients with the most serious condition.

• 4 Medical Exam Show More

  Once patients are placed in a treatment room, an emergency medicine physician will exam them. The attending physician may decide to order clinical tests such as blood work, X-rays, a CT scan or an ultrasound, in which case patients may need to wait for the results before their physician can make a decision about proper treatment.

  We encourage our patients to ask questions of the nurses and physicians on staff. We want to make every effort to keep patients and their families informed about their treatment.

  Once testing is complete, the physician contacts the patient’s primary care and any specialists required to determine if the patient can be discharged or should be admitted to the hospital. Emergency Department physicians do not admit patients to the hospital.

  When patients are discharged from the ED, they will be given detailed instructions for follow-up care, along with any necessary prescriptions.

• 6 Admission to Hospital Show More

  When patients are admitted to the hospital, a primary physician must be contacted to complete the process. Occasionally, patients will have to wait to be admitted while the results of testing are attained, an assessment and consultation by a physician occurs, or a specific type of room.

  Billing

  Co-pays, if required by a patient’s insurance may be requested before discharge. Patients receive separate bills from the hospital for the ED visit as well as the Emergency Department physician and the radiologists for services provided.

  Visitors

  The privacy and confidentiality of our patients is very important to us. Therefore, we ask that visitors are limited to one person per room. Under special circumstances, more than one visitor may be allowed in a room. In this case, the primary visitor will be given a visitor pass, which can be exchanged with another visitor at any time.

  Cell Phones

  Cell phone usage is not allowed in the Emergency Department. As a courtesy to other guests and staff, we ask that all cell phone calls be taken in the waiting area and that phones be set to silent.
